We had two choices:

  1. Let the 1000+ hours go to waste that went into making MODx.
  2. Continue developing, and go it alone.

We choose #2.

MODx was the first major module to work with Etomite 0.6 and now will become a major overhaul of the CMS-formerly-known-as-Etomite. Etomite's author and copyright owner ceased development of it in favor of creating a new commercial product, which will contain some of the ideas ushered into being by MODx. MODx will always remain licensed as a GPL product, with ongoing development and support.

Over the weekend of March 19th, 2005, MODx and any reference thereto was removed from the Etomite forums. The only other CMS to attain such "lofty" status is Mambo, another great open source CMS. Etomite's team calls us a fork, so now a fork it is! ;)

As of April 8, 2005, we've formalized an initial core team, including moderators, coders, technical writers and a marketing team. We're making incredible progress and have come up with some truly revolutionary things. You can expect a technology preview release before the end of April, along with the announcement of the product name in that general timeframe as well.

With it's eigth release slated for November 2005, you can download MODx (forum account required) or view the documentation. You can also email questions to modx@vertexworks.com to if you're particularly curious.

Viva la Revolution!
